144 MHz Trophy Contest 2019

For the second year running, the weather was kind to most entrants this year with warm, dry weather on both days. However, winds gusting to 50mph in the South East of England did cause issues to at least one group. There was the usual crop of equipment failures and problems. This year, preamps seemed to cause most of the problems.

Conditions were rated as `nothing special' by most entrants. Several stations located near population centres commented on the increasing problem of local noise sources masking signals in some directions.

The number of logs submitted rose again, up from 118 in 2018 (82 in 2015, 85 in 2016, 109 in 2017) to 128 this year. Entries were received from EI, G, GM, GW, GD, F and PA.

The average conditions produced a bumper crop of DX contacts. There were 147 contacts over 800km of which 41 were over 900km and only six exceeded 1000km. G8P made five contacts over 1000km and G0VHF/P made one contact over 1000km. The best contact by a UK&CD station was between G8P and OK6M at 1122km. No one managed to break the 1000 QSO barrier this year; G8P made the highest number of valid contacts at 812.

Two reports of poor/wide signals were received. Both cases have been investigated. In the first case, the issue was judged to be receiver overload so no action has been taken. In the second case, the transmitted signal was judged to be below the required standard and a points penalty has been imposed.

Please remember that while it may appear that there is a problem with a transmission, the effect can also be caused by the receiver being unable to cope with very strong signals so please check your receiving system carefully before complaining! Conversely, if you do receive a complaint, you must log it and check that your signal is not at fault.
